The annual tradition of the Farmer’s Market gets underway on Wednesday in downtown Tyrone although a pending improvement project may eventually affect its usual location.
The borough received a letter from the Way Fruit Farm asking for permission from the municipality to approve the weekly event. Borough Manager Nathan George presented the request at Monday night’s council meeting.
George was informed by Rose Black of the Chamber that the vendors will be using the parking spaces on Logan Avenue on the east side of the street between 10th Street and Herald Street for their displays. People then browse and make purchases on the sidewalk on the east side of the street.
At last night’s meeting, George informed council, neither the police chief, Joe Beachem, or highway superintendent Verden Latchford had any problem with the request.
There was some concern regarding the eventual start of work on the Streetscape Phase II project. George indicated the project would eventually interfere with the Farmer’s Market at some point. He noted event organizers have decided to start holding the event at the usual site and then move if it becomes necessary.
George explained he thought it was an ideal solution since construction plans are still pending on Streetscape Phase II.
If the move becomes necessary, council agreed to let the Farmer’s Market be held in the municipal parking lot, next to the YMCA across from Gardners Candies.
One other change is the timing of the first event of the season scheduled for tomorrow. This year, things are getting underway sooner than in some past years.
“It is a little earlier this year,” said Sharon Way, contact person for the Farmer’s Market. “That is because crops are a little earlier this year. It is due to those 80 degree days in May.”
In addition to Way Fruit Farm of Stormstown, there will be other vendors according to Mrs. Way.
“Judy Brumbaugh, who is a baker from Williamsburg, will be offering baked goods at the market,” Way told The Daily Herald.
“We really appreciate the support of our base clientele and hope to have it again,” added Way.
She said the Farmer’s Market has been held for at least the last 15 years in downtown Tyrone.
Way can be reached at 692-5211for more information.
During last night’s council meeting, the borough also agreed to have the police department bag the parking meters the night prior to the events to prevent motorists from parking in the affected area.
The Farmer’s Market will be held every Wednesday between now and the end of October.
