A play is so much more than standing on a stage and reciting lines.
It begins with an idea, the writing of a script, composing music, designing a set, costumes, lighting- all of which takes place long before any actors ever look at the words and try to interpret them.
This summer the TCP building (the former Tyrone-Snyder Public Library), will be bursting at the seams with youthful creativity as young thespians are welcomed to a program celebrating inventiveness, and helping to transfer the ideas in those young imaginations to the stage.
Hey Kids! Let’s Create a Play is a two week interactive theater experience for young thespians between the ages of eight and 12 years.
During this two week period these naturally ingenious young people will be introduced to the creative elements involved in producing a stage play, including the composition of theme music with the assistance of Tyrone composer William A. Jones, developing a story and transferring it into script form with the aide of local playwright Cindy Bennett.
The design of sets, costumes and lighting will be nurtured and directed by Nancy Sloss, Richard Ward and a variety of their ingenious friends.
Karen Mayhew, a music teacher at St. Matthew’s School, will develop a children’s community chorus, to be called ACT 2 JR., that could perform at other venues within the community if desired.
For young persons over the age of 12 who are interested in exploring the bones of a theater production, two interns will be accepted to shadow the two primary facilitators, Nancy Sloss and Cindy Bennett.
At the completion of the two week session, which will run from 9 a.m. until noon, Monday through Friday, participants will perform their creation for family members and invited guests.
A small reception will follow the performance to be held in the ballroom of TCP’s building.
Registration is limited in number and will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
The cost of the program is $55 for the two week period. Registration forms are available at the front desk of the Tyrone YMCA, or may be acquired by phoning the ArtsLine at 684-ART2 and leaving a message. A $20 deposit is required with the completed registration form.
Finished registration forms may be returned to the TCP building mailbox, located at 1019 Logan Ave., and a confirmation phone call will be made to participants.
Participants in this exciting workshop will be encouraged to explore their imaginations and then find effective ways to transfer those ideas to the reality of the stage. They will also perform, learning various acting techniques and skills from the facilitators, and direct the production of their play.
Dates for Hey Kids! Let’s Create a Play are July 19 through the 30th. If anyone would like additional information, feel free to phone the ArtsLine at 684-ART2.
This program is made possible by a grant from the PA Council On The Arts, a state agency, National Endowment For The Arts, a federal agency, and Tyrone Borough.
