Before this week Tyrone had not won a game without Barry Gummo on the mound. Thursday they won their second straight without him throwing a pitch, but Gummo still had a huge impact on the game, hitting a double and a two-run triple. Ben Gummo went the distance on the mound and struck out nine as Tyrone scored in their final at bat to top Hoss\’s 7-6.
The first few innings were a pitcher\’s duel between Gummo and Chris Barroner.
Gummo struck out five batters in the first three innings and allowed only two singles. Barroner struck out three and walked only one in his first three innings of work.
In the fourth inning both teams were finally able to figure out the opposing pitcher and put some runs on the scoreboard.
Nathaniel Barroner got things rolling for Hoss\’s with a single and moved to second on a pass ball and to third on a wild pitch. Brandon Marasco drew a walk and stole second before Ryan Conway walked to load the bases. A pass ball scored Barroner and moved everyone up a base. Consecutive ground outs scored Marasco and Conway before Gummo got a strike out to end the inning.
“Ben looked real well early, and we didn\’t have any relief pitchers available so we had to keep him in there the whole game,” said head coach John Gummo.
Trailing 3-0, Barry Gummo ignited the Tyrone offense with a line drive just inside the left field line for a double. He moved to third on a failed pick off move, and after Ben Gummo was hit by a pitch, he scored on a Clint Wilson ground out.
Ben Gummo solved his control problems in the fifth and got out of the inning scoreless setting Tyrone up for a big bottom half of the inning.
Tyler Rickards led off with a single, but was retired on a fielder\’s choice. With Ben Lynn on first, Jeremy Myers was hit by a pitch. Shane Gherrity drove in Lynn with an RBI single, and Barry Gummo cleared the bases with a triple to give Tyrone the lead. A wild pitch allowed Gummo to score and add an insurance run to make the score 5-3.
“Barry has been doing real good in that lead off spot, driving in runs, stealing, doing everything well,” said Gummo about his center fielder.
Tyrone added a run in the sixth when Derrick Soellner singled and moved to third after walks to Jason Wilson and Tyler Hoover. Soellner scored when relief pitcher Dan Wicks walked Myers.
With a 6-3 lead Ben Gummo headed back to the mound for the seventh inning, but his defense would let him down. After quickly getting the first two outs, Nathaniel Barroner doubled. The next two batters reached on errors, making the score 6-5 with a runner on second. Mike Heist tied the game with an RBI single and stole second before Soellner threw him out attempting to take third.
Ben Gummo got things started at the plate in the bottom half of the inning with a lead off walk, but was erased on a fielder\’s choice hit by Clint Wilson. Pinch runner Matt Morrissey moved to third on a Soellner single that got away from left fielder Kyle Pacheco and allowed Soellner to take second. Wicks got a strike out, but catcher Nathaniel Barroner handed Tyrone a victory a pitch later when he attempted to pick off Morrissey from third and threw the ball into left field allowing Morrissey to score the game winner.
“Our pitching is carrying us so far this season, we hit a lot of balls hard today and I think the hitting is going to come around,” said Gummo.
The team is currently hitting only .255, but has a team ERA of 2.93.
Tyrone will be in action Saturday for a double header at Tyrone. The first game starts at 2:00 PM.
