Barry Gummo threw his third shutout of the season, and Clint Wilson capped off a 12 run explosion in the first three innings for Tyrone with a grand slam as Tyrone blanked Sheetz 12-0.
Gummo worked through the first quickly by retiring the side in order. Then he walked to lead off the bottom of the inning. After two ground outs, Clint Wilson collected the first of his six RBI on the day with a single to left. Jason Wilson drew a walk, and Tyler Rickards brought both runners home with a double to deep right. Shane Gherrity followed with a single that brought home Rickards.
Gherrity, who went 3-3 in the game, is hitting .565 over the last six games and has raised his season average to .410 with his recent hot streak.
“Shane has been a big boost down at the bottom of the order getting hits and driving in runs, and he\’s also a good base runner too,” said head coach John Gummo about his utility starter.
Leading 4-0, Gummo sat down Sheetz in order again, and the Tyrone Legion offense went right back to work.
With two outs, Ben Gummo tripled and an error on a Thadd Westley grounder allowed him to score. Clint Wilson ripped an RBI single down the first base line that scored Westley. Moments later, Jason Wilson doubled and Clint scored from first under the tag of catcher Cory Fatigante.
Sheetz got their only base runners in the third. With two outs, Fatigante singled and Jordan Dillen drew a walk, but Gummo struck out Brent Massar to end the threat.
Gherrity got things rolling again for the Legion in the third with a single. Once again with two outs, Barry Gummo singled to score Gherrity. Ben Gummo singled, and after a wild pitch there were runners at second and third. Westley walked to load the bases, and a pitch later Clint Wilson smacked a towering grand slam to right.
“We got all our runs with two outs. Every time we got runners on we got key hits to score them, and a lot of that time it was Clint. He did real well, drove in half our runs, and they were all hard hits, nothing cheap,” said Gummo.
Gummo didn\’t allow a ball out of the infield against the middle of Sheetz’ order in the fourth, but the Legion couldn\’t take advantage of a Gherrity double in the bottom of the inning and were held scoreless for the first inning of the game.
The 12-0 cushion was more than enough for Gummo. He put Sheetz away quickly with a fly out, a ground out and struck out Ryan Greaser to end the game.
“Barry was rested up and throwing the ball harder than he has all season. His timing out there is getting good at just the right time,” said Gummo
With his third complete game shutout Barry Gummo improved to 8-0 and lowered his ERA to 0.79.
Legion Notes: Gummo has given up only five earned runs in 44 1/3 innings pitched this season… In those innings he\’s only allowed 23 hits and has a 54-15 strikeout to walk ratio… Ben Gummo caught his first game of the season when Derrick Soellner missed the game… Gherrity started at shortstop, but has played third, right field, left field and pitched this season… Tyrone Legion played error free ball… Tyrone swept Sheetz this season winning 5-4, 8-3 and 12-0… Barry Gummo was the winning pitcher in all three games.
