The Tyrone Legion demonstrated how far they have come as a team this season Saturday when they crushed Dick\’s Pharmacy 16-4. Earlier this year, the Legion struggled in a 9-7 loss to Dick\’s. Saturday Barry Gummo, Thadd Westley and Clint Wilson all had three hits a piece to prevent history from repeating itself.
Tyrone took an early lead when Gummo doubled and scored in the first inning, but Dick\’s Pharmacy took advantage of some Legion miscues to get the lead in the bottom of the inning.
Dan DePaulis was hit by a pitch before two errors and three singles off Legion hurler Clint Wilson led to a three run inning.
The bottom of the order got things going for the Legion in the second to help Tyrone reclaim the lead for good. Tyler Rickards and Shane Gherrity walked to lead off the inning, and Ben Lynn scored Rickards with a single. After Dick\’s Pharmacy pitcher Tommy Seasoltz got a strike out, Barry Gummo was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ben Gummo cleared them with a three run double four pitches later. A Westley double scored Gummo, and Wilson made it three doubles in a row to score Westley. With Wilson on second, Derrick Soellner capped off the eight run inning with a two run homer to give the Tyrone Legion a 9-3 lead.
Wilson struck out two in the bottom of the inning and kept Dick\’s Pharmacy off the scoreboard until the bottom of the third when an error, a walk and a single led to a run for Dick\’s.
The Tyrone Legion added to their lead in the fourth thanks to two Dick\’s Pharmacy miscues and a Wilson single that led to two runs.
A one out Barry Gummo double in the fifth led to another run when he scored on Westley\’s second double of the game to give Tyrone a 12-4 lead.
Meanwhile, Wilson found his groove on the mound. He faced the minimum in the fourth and fifth and had two strike outs.
In the sixth inning the Legion added four more runs to enforce the ten-run mercy rule. Once again the bottom of the lineup was the catalyst as Rickards walked, Gherrity singled and Lynn singled to score Rickards. After a Barry Gummo single, Ben Gummo was hit by a pitch, and Westley capped off the scoring with a two run single for his third and fourth RBIs of the day.
Wilson allowed only one base runner in the bottom of the inning and struck out Dustin James to end the game and give the Tyrone Legion a 16-4 victory.
Monday evening Tyrone was scheduled to finish off their regular season against ReMax Realty at Vet\’s field in Altoona. The game was called due to rain in the fourth, but the Legion made a statement heading into the playoffs before the rain ruined their upset bid.
In their two previous meetings with first place ReMax Realty Tyrone was defeated 12-2 and 14-2, but Monday with Mike Rodriguez, considered ReMax Realty\’s best pitcher on the mound, the game played out much different. The Legion smacked seven hits, scored six runs, and led 6-5 when the game was called.
ReMax Realty took the lead in the first when Adam Kaack singled and eventually scored on a Rodriguez sacrifice fly.
The Tyrone Legion responded with a run of their own in the top of the second.
With one out, Jason Wilson singled and stole second. After Rickards drew a walk, Gherrity singled to bring home Wilson.
ReMax Realty struck back in the third thanks to a few Tyrone miscues and some luck. Kaack walked before Legion hurler Jason Wilson got Jon Milliron to fly out.
The next batter Mike Rodriguez launched a deep fly ball, but left fielder Shane Gherrity got under it in time and squeezed his glove shut. Unfortunately his glove did not contain the ball. It had kicked off the top of his glove and gone over the fence for a two run home run.
Two more runs scored on two Legion errors and an A.J. Palazzi single to make the score 5-1 ReMax Realty.
Rodriguez struck out the first two Legion batters of the fourth, but as they have so many times this season, Tyrone got some two out lightning. Rickards walked for the second time in the game, and Gherrity scored him with a double. Jeremy Myers knocked in Gherrity with a single and came around to score when Barry Gummo tripled. Two straight ReMax miscues allowed Ben Gummo and Westley to reach and Clint Wilson singled in Gummo before the skies opened up.
With Tyrone leading 6-5, the game was called after about a half hour of steady rain. The game will not be made up because playoffs start Friday.
Legion Notes: Tyrone\’s likely first round opponent will be Locker Room… In their only match-up this year Tyrone was victorious 3-2… Barry Gummo finished the regular season undefeated on the mound at 8-0, and he is expected to start the playoff opener… Official times and dates of the playoff games will be announced Thursday… In the Kelly Federation playoffs the first round is a best of three game series.
