Man killed in attempt to retrieve grill at Raystown

A Perry County man is dead after attempting to retrieve a grill which had fallen into the water at Lake Raystown.
Forty-seven-year-old Richard Leroy Hoffer’s body was retrieved from the lake yesterday afternoon by a dive team at approximately 3 p.m.
The incident which led to his death occurred around 7 p.m. on Sunday when Hoffer was on a boat at L dock with family and friends. The boat was being docked when the man knocked a propane grill into the water while tying the boat to the dock.
At that point, the New Bloomfield man went into the water in an attempt to retrieve the grill. He then came back to the surface and spoke to other people in the boat. He then submerged himself in the water and did not return to the surface.
Another man on the boat went in the water in an attempt to locate Hoffer. 911 was called a short time later.
Several persons in the area went into the water and also tried to locate the victim. Emergency response officials arrived at the scene and began to search the scene.
Yesterday, a dive team from Mike’s Scuba of Hollidaysburg found Hoffer’s body.
His death is being listed as a drowning by the Huntingdon County Coroner Ronald Morder. An autopsy was scheduled to be conducted today at the J. C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon.
According to information provided by the Huntingdon-based state police, more than a dozen agencies assisted in the search effort.
