The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program helps eligible older adults with tax return preparation and filing.
The local VITA program, sponsored by Blair Senior Services’ Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, is recruiting people to be trained as VITA volunteers. Potential volunteers will start with a basic training class that will be held the week of November 8-12 at the Blair Senior Service Center.
This optional class is conducted by an experienced VITA volunteer. The Internal Revenue Service and the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue provide additional training in January. Trainees become certified VITA volunteers by passing a test at the completion of all training. VITA volunteers may choose to work at any of the VITA sites that will be located throughout Blair County. New volunteers at each site will be partnered with more experienced volunteers.
There is no age limit or fee for this training. All that is required is a willingness to learn and to help others. VITA volunteers are asked to provide a minimum of three hours each week to assist older individuals with basic tax returns.
Assignments begin the first week of February and run through April 15.
For more information and to sign up for the VITA training, call Maureen Adams at 946-1235.
