The Tyrone Area Historical Society will sponsor the Northern Blair County Postcard Show on Saturday, November 6 at the Tyrone Social Center on West 10th Street, Tyrone.
The show will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is $2.
The idea of holding such a show began back in the summer of 2003 when the Historical Society invited Regis Nale, of Claysburg, to share his program, “From St. Nicholas to Santa Claus,” based on his collection of postcards that he collected over the years. During the slideshow of his postcards, Nale was able to show the changes in dress, transportation, customs, duties, companions and physical attributes of St. Nicholas to Santa Claus.
This past April, The Daily Herald published a ‘Postcards from the Past’ tab that was very well received in the community.
Postcard collecting is an extremely popular hobby and continues to grow. While some people collect many types of cards, others prefer to stick with one type such as postcards with greetings or views.
The postcard show will provide a place for individuals to gather and enjoy the exhibit, but it will also bring several dealers to the area that come to sell their postcards as well as share their collections.
The Historical Society has been planning for this event for quite some time now. Learning about postcard collecting along the way, Nancy Smith gathered information on the hobby and using information found in magazines, sent out invitations to dealers, asking them to participate in the Northern Blair County show.
The hope is, according to Smith, to draw in dealers from other areas and at the same time bring business to the Tyrone community.
The show will provide postcard fans a chance to view exhibits but will also host dealers with large collections and an assortment of cards. But, whether a collector, history buff, or just curious, the show should provide an interesting day for all who attend.
Breakfast and lunch will be available to purchase, courtesy of the Tyrone Community Partnership.
