The Bellwood-Antis girls basketball team scored a total of just two points in the opening period at Glendale on Monday night. Then the Lady Blue Devils scored only two points on the way out in the fourth quarter.
The problem, and it was a monumental one was that the B-A girls held the Lady Vikings scoreless in the third period and outscored Glendale 37-7 overall during the two middle quarters to win easily 41-16 to nail down their second win in a row to even their record at 5-5.
Stephanie Hatch scored 18 points and blocked four shots, and Lauren Carter scored 12 points, had five steals and 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Blue Devils. Jamie Smith pulled down six rebounds.
The game was played with an abundance of mistakes by both squads early and by Glendale through much of the contest, resulting in extremely low scoring first and fourth quarters.
Lauren Carter scored on a rebound and putback for the Lady Blue devils only score of the opening eight minutes, although the hosts couldn’t put much distance between themselves and the Blue Devils leading 5-2 at the end of one.
Allison Sinisi hit a short runner to begin the second quarter to slice the deficit to 5-4 and the Blue Devils went on an 8-0 streak. Glendale’s Ashlee McQuown popped in a three-pointer to stop the run and Lady Blue Devil Jamie Smith answered that with a trey of her own. Carter hit two of four foul shots and Steph Hatch added a bucket before Glendale closed out the first half with three points. Bellwood-Antis went into the locker room up 21-12.
“It was nice to get two wins in a row,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Nick Lovrich. “It’s the first time this season, we have had a two-game win streak. So now we count on our roller coaster staying up high for a little bit. We try to stress it’s a team effort. We need everybody else to perform. We just can’t depend on one person all the time.
“Tonight with Steph and Lauren in double digits, that makes it tough on other teams. And Jamie stepped up and got some big rebounds and threw some nice passes.”
The third quarter was scoreless for the opening two minutes, but the Lady Blue Devils made up for that Steph Hatch fired in a three-pointer to open the scoring and later would add a pair of baskets and two free throws. Carter hit three buckets and Smith added one and the B-A defense held Glendale without a point scored.
The Lady Vikings, who needed desperately to get lots of scores to get any chance to get back in the game in the final quarter went scoreless for the first three minutes plus of the quarter. Carter tossed in the first points of the stanza and with reserves in the game for both teams for most of the quarter, McQuown’s two baskets were all Glendale were able to muster.
“Defense was probably our biggest asset in this game,” commented Lovrich. “We only gave up four points in the whole second half. That just says a lot about the heart of our kids. They went out and had fun tonight. This was probably the first time since I’ve been around we have shut a team out for a whole period. That’s pretty impressive, I think they went almost 12 minutes without having them score. With all the girls we played, that’s a good statement about our defense.”
Junior Varsity
Glendale kept the Bellwood-Antis Lady Blue Devil junior varsity winless last night with a 31-10 triumph over the visitors.
Brittany Webb had six points to lead the Lady Blue Devils and Kerstin Myers and Chelsea Young added two points each. Shalee Hunter pulled down four rebounds for the B-A girls.
The Bellwood-Antis girls continue a two-game road swing with a contest at Juniata Valley on Wednesday, before closing out a busy week at home against Williamsburg on Friday. Both evenings will begin with the junior varsity game at 6 p.m. and the varsity following at 7:30.
