The friendly, old-fashion customer-oriented service at Mac’s Market is a pleasant change when it comes to modern day shopping.
Mac’s Market, located at 1658 Columbia Avenue, Tyrone, has been a valuable part of the Tyrone community for several generations.
Currently owned by Brian G. McManigal Sr., Mac’s Market provides a full line of groceries and produce, but is mainly known as a meat market.
“If anyone new moves to town and asks where to buy meat, they are told there’s only one place – Mac’s Market,” explained McManigal.
Individuals can also stop in to purchase homemade soups such as vegetable beef, ham pot pie, pasta fajioli, spicy chili, chicken corn and much more.
Also available are snack and party trays for all occasions. There is such a wide variety of things to choose from, there is something for everyone.
A piece of Tyrone history, the store dates back to the early 1900s. The building was built in 1923 by Mr. Heberling and Mr. Biggins. At some point Mr. Heberling bought out Mr. Biggins’ half of the business. Eventually Mr. Heberling sold the business to his son, Jack Heberling. In February of 1974 Mac and Evelyn McManigal purchased the store and changed the name to Mac’s Market.
“My father purchased the store in 1974 and renamed it Mac’s Market,” said McManigal. “Then I purchased the store in January of 1989 and have been running it since.”
Taking over the store seemed like the next step since McManigal had been working there, even as a teenager.
“I’ve worked here at the store for almost 31 years now,” he said.
Besides McManigal, Mac’s also employs Helen Green, Ashley McManigal and Brian McManigal, Jr.
When describing the vision of Mac’s Market, McManigal said, “I’ve tried to change with the time but still preserve the old-fashion, service minded, customer friendly atmosphere.”
One of the features that sets Mac’s Market apart from others is the fact that they deliver. That is just one of the old-fashion services still available at the market.
Business hours are Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The store is closed Sunday and Monday. The phone number is 684-0660.
