The beginning and ending were great in the Bellwood-Antis wrestlers first outing of the season at Huntingdon on Tuesday. The match started at the 125-pound weight class with Bellwood-Antis junior Brandon Beech pinning the Bearcats’ Landon Yingling and ended at 119 with B-A junior Eli Colyer showing Vance Myers the lights.
Unfortunately for the Blue Devils (0-1), Huntingdon won all of the 12 matches in between, including five by forfeit to smash Bellwood-Antis 66-12.
“We were up against it going into the match. We knew that,” said Bellwood-Antis wrestling coach Ron Wilson. “We were giving up 30 points from the very beginning, so we knew it was going to be ugly no matter what happened.”
Bellwood-Antis has been fighting a numbers problem for years and the late end to the football season means that some help is coming, but the help wasn’t ready for varsity competition on Tuesday night.
Beech opened the dual with an early takedown, but then surrendered a reversal as Yingling tied up the match 2-2 at the end of one period. Yingling choose to start the second period in the down position and Beech wrapped up a cradle and applied the fall at the 2:40 mark for a quick 6-0 lead.
After Huntingdon pretty much had their way in the next dozen weight classes, Colyer closed out the dual with the Blue Devils second pin of the contest. Eli worked a takedown and escape to slip out to a 3-2 first-period advantage and added a two-point nearfall, turning Myers twice, once for a two-count, and then for the second period pin with the clock running down with 12 seconds to go in the middle stanza.
Huntingdon, which boasts eight seniors in their lineup, got falls from Tim Brown over Ricky Shawley at 130, Dusten Kanagy over Dustin Harris at 145, Chris Banks over Ron Colyer at 152, Tim Cousins over Josh Hanna at 160 and Peter Mykut over Don Partner at 103.
Dave Runk (171), Brad Hollenbaugh (189), Brandon VanBuskirk (215 ), Joe Gongloff (275) and Phillip Brown (112) received forfeits for Huntingdon.
At 135, B-A sophomore Ronnie Wilson jumped out to a 5-0 first period advantage over Kyle Thompson, only to get caught for two sets of back points in the second period and an escape, takedown and nearfall in the final two-minutes to drop an 11-5 decision to Thompson.
In the only other match to go the full six minutes, Chris Myers, arguably Huntingdon’s best grappler dominated Josh Ervine 14-1 at 140. Myers registered a pair of takedowns, two nearfalls, an escape, penalty point and reversal.
“We know where we have to go,” said Wilson. “The kids are working hard in practice. Hopefully they will keep improving and we can be a pretty good team by the end of the year.”
The Blue Devils next dual meet will be Tuesday, Dec. 14, at Bellwood against Northern Bedford in the B-A Middle School gymnasium. Junior high wrestling will start at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow at 7 p.m. On Dec. 17-18, Bellwood-Antis will travel to Claysburg-Kimmel for the annual 10-team Tri-County Tournament with wrestling beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The Bellwood-Antis junior high dropped a 59-41 match to the Huntingdon junior high team. Troy Weyant (80), Kyle Shawley (115) Shane Noye (122) and Kris Morder (250) won by pin for the Blue Devils. Trey Mock (100) and Dustin Pruznak (130) won by major decision and Tim Collier (110) won an 8-1 decision. Derrick Wolfe (105) won by forfeit.
