Members of the instrumental music department at Tyrone Area High School are looking forward to a trip to Ohio this May.
According to TAHS band director, Kris Laird, the group is scheduled to leave on Friday, May 27 and travel to Sandusky, Ohio. On Saturday, May 28 the high school concert band and jazz bands will perform for a panel of adjudicators who will evaluate them and offer tips for improvement.
Students will spend the remainder of the day enjoying Cedar Point Amusement Park, and an awards ceremony for all performing groups will be held in the park that evening.
The next stop on the trip will be Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday, May 29, where the students will get an educational tour of the Great Lakes Science Center and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
The Tyrone marching band will offer a performance of “Movin’ Out”, their 2004-05 field show, featuring the music of Billy Joel. After a dinner at the Cleveland Hard Rock Café, the band members will depart Cleveland to return home.
“This trip has been a goal of mine for a few years now, and I am excited to take this talented group of kids to Ohio for this educational and musical experience. I am sure that those involved will have a great time and remember it for years to come,” added Laird.
In preparation for this trip, students and parents have been busy planning fundraisers to pay expenses. The band students are currently selling Subway coupons for a six-inch sub and drink at various Subway locations.
In addition, the Band Booster organization is planning a 21-year-and-older benefit dance and silent auction to help raise money for the trip.
The dance will be held at the Tyrone American Legion on Saturday, March 19 from 9 – 12 p.m. Doors will open at 8 p.m. to view the auction items which will include: gift baskets, certificates and coupons from local businesses, a trip for two to Atlantic City, NJ and much more.
Tickets for the dance are $5 a person and will be available at the door. Silent auction tickets will be sold separately at the door with items being given away every half-hour starting at 9:30 p.m. Drinks and snacks will be available, and music will be provided by DJ Sky Blue Caddy.
