The Bellwood-Antis girls softball team opened their season at Northern Bedford on Wednesday afternoon. The game was moved back a day to take advantage of the warm sunshine of yesterday afternoon after originially scheduled for Tuesday to provide for a dry field at Loysburg.
The pitching tandem of freshman Kala Reider and veteran letterwinner Christine Pfahler limited Northern Bedford to just one hit, but wildness killed the Lady Blue Devils as the B-A pitchers yielded 24 walks to spoil their opener, a 12-2 win for the Northern Bedford Lady Panthers.
Bellwood-Antis pounded out six hits, including two each by Charlie Burns and Pfahler.
The Lady Blue Devils scored once in the fourth inning and once in the fifth to close the Northern Bedford lead to 5-2, before things fell apart late.
Christin Pfahler and Charley Burns opened the fourth with singles. Following a double steal that moved the runners up, Heather Detwiler singled up the middle to drive in Pfahler.
An inning later, Beth Helsel and Kala Reider each drew walks, then Pam Weyant’s single scored Helsel.
“The girls did a really good job out there,” said Bellwood-Antis second-year coach Alex Sitman. “We are a work in progress. The final score was not a true indication of the way our girls played today. This is a much different team from last year, even though it’s practically the same girls. minus the three seniors we lost. It’s a long process. They are starting to believe and play with confidence. It will take a long time, but this group of girls is working harder than any group I have ever coached.
Erin Godshall was the winning pitcher for Northern, striking out eight and walking two batters.
Bellwood-Antis is back on the field today for a home game against Bishop Guilfoyle. The game, which is set to begin at 4 p.m., was originally set for BG, but their field isn’t ready, so the contest was moved to Bellwood.
