Tyler Noel pitched and batted the Glendale baseball team to a 6-3 victory over Bellwood-Antis at Bellwood’s Stadium Drive diamond on Wednesday afternoon.
The first Viking triumph over the Blue Devils in many years, Glendale took a 3-0 lead after three innings and Noel waded through the B-A lineup with seven strikeouts in the opening four innings before settling with 10 Ks and two walks. Noel scattered five hits, while giving up just two earned runs in going the distance for the win.
Bellwood-Antis had trouble getting to Noel until the fifth, when Adam DeArmitt forced Troy Brunner at second, moved to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single to left by Andy Brisbin. Brunner had struck out, but reached first base when the ball bounced away from the Glendale catcher for a wild pitch.
An inning later, Brandon Beech doubled with one out, into right center, and went to third when Glendale committed their only error on a grounder by Tyler McClellan. Brian Hostler looped a double into short left field, scoring both runners and hustled it into a two-bagger that sliced the Blue Devil deficit to 5-3.
Noel, who had singled in a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, then came back with some insurance, singling in another run in the seventh.
Bellwood-Antis was unable to get any clutch hits other than Brisbin’s fifth inning bingle, despite leaving runners on in scoring position in five of the first six frames, including runners at second and third base with one out in both the first and sixth innings.
Blue Devil notes: Bellwood-Antis stole a season high four bases….Brian Hostler raised his batting average to .462 (6-for-13) and now has five RBI, five runs scored, two walks, two stolen bases and a double, while playing only five games….The Bellwood-Antis/Moshannon Valley game scheduled for Friday, has been moved up a day to today at Moshannon Valley High School. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
