It’s been a labor of love for Bellwood-Antis girls track and field coach Julie Roseborough. For 40 years, Roseborough has been the only head coach in the history of B-A girls track. On Tuesday against backyard rival Tyrone, Roseborough’s young athletes presented the long-time coach with her 300th career win, defeating the Lady Eagles 97-53. Roseborough improves her record to 300-54-2 overall and 9-2 this season.
“It’s a lot of good kids and a lot of good memories,” said Roseborough, who was presented with a cake by her athletes at the end of the meet. It’s kind of exciting to reach the milestones. They’re kind of the little extras It doesn’t seem like it’s been 40 years. It has taken awhile though, because when Bellwood-Antis first started the girls program, we only had two or three meets a year, the first few years.
“It is always nice to be able to win against a local team. Tyrone has some good athletes. In several of the events, we were able to counterbalance a good performance there by getting seconds and thirds. The weather was good and that helped the sprinters’ times. Ashley Mueller had a nice day with three wins, but it was our overall balance that made the win possible.”
Ashley Mueller (100 dash, 200 dash, 100 IM hurdles) won three individual events for the Lady Blue Devils and anchored the victorious 400 relay team and Steph Hatch won the high jump and long jump, led off the 400 relay and placed second in the triple jump to lead Bellwood-Antis to the win. Lauren Leap won the 400 dash and was second in the high jump and third in the long jump, as well as joining Lauren Carter, Jenna Ralston and Chelsea Wilson on the winning 1600 relay team.
Carter won the 300 IM hurdles, Stephanie Damiano won the discus and Allison Sinisi won the pole vault. Hatch, Carter, Erica Greene and Mueller won the 400 relay and Arin Cherry, Brittany Webb, Amanda Houtz and Leslie Mills won the 3200 relay.
The Tyrone Golden Eagles faced yet another disappointing loss on Tuesday, this time to cross town rivals Bellwood Antis. The final score for the boys meet was 65-85 and the girls came up short, losing to the Lady Blue Devils 53-97.
The Bellwood-Antis boys (10-1) got a monster performance from sophomore Brandon Pruznak, who won the 200 and 400 dashes and the high jump and long jump. Tyler Narehood won the shot put, Ben Hatch won the 800 run, Elliot Geist won the 3200 and Aaron Bell won the 1600 run for the Blue Devils.
Perhaps the key in the B-A boys meet was the second and third place finishes, which B-A coach Nick Lovrich mentioned.
“This was something I knew was going to be close,” said Lovrich. “Tyrone has good sprinters and jumpers and we have a lot of strength and depth in out middle and distance runners and our throwers. We shifted some of the kids around to be able to be in place to get the second and third places that made the difference. When it’s a rivalry like Tyrone, we want to do our best and then put forth a little extra effort. That’s what our kids were able to do.”
The boys entered the meet with bright prospects, but were unable to secure the points they needed to pull it out. Many firsts were taken, but the second and third places just weren’t there when the smaller points were needed. The only double for the Eagles was junior Trey Brockett in the long jump and triple jump. Other winners for the boys were senior Bill Dean (100 dash), senior Brad Schmidt (300 hurdles), senior Terry Tate (discus), junior Shawn Ketrow (pole vault) and junior Adam Shaffer (javelin.)
The Eagles swept all three places in the triple jump and the 400 meter relay was won for Tyrone by the team of Matt Lauder, Trey Brockett, Leonard Wilson and Bill Dean.
The Lady Eagles lost yet another meet to the Bellwood Antis girls team with a final score of 53-97. The girls placed frequently but lacked key wins, keeping them 44 points behind the Lady Blue Devils.
Junior Emily Ingle had three first place wins which included the 1600 meter run, 800 meter run and the 3200 meter run. Other first place winners were Marissa Hoover (shot put), Elizabeth Tepsic (triple jump) and Katie Schreckengost (javelin.)
The Eagles face off against Huntingdon and Philipsburg-Osceola in their final home meet of the season on Thursday, April 21 at 4 p.m..
