The Bellwood-Antis boys and girls track and field teams claimed the championships in the annual Mountain Conference at Bellwood on Monday evening.
The Bellwood-Antis boys won the annual event for the fourth straight year and have now won eight of the last nine championships, with Tyrone breaking the monopoly in 2001.
Bellwood-Antis got a pair of wins from Aaron Bell in the 1600 and 3200, and top finishes from Tony DelGrosso in the discus, Ben Hatch in the 800. The 1600 relay team of Evan Hughes, Chris Edmiston, Dan Kovac and Brandon Pruznak and the 3200 relay team of Hughes, Edmiston, Elliot Geist and Bell both won their respective races and the B-A 400 relay team placed second to the Tyrone team of Billy Dean, Leonard Wilson, Shane Barr and Trey Brockett which had a winning time of 45.4.
Brandon Pruznak had a second in the 400 (51.6) and long jump (20-1 3/4 and a fourth in the 200 (24.1). DelGrosso added a third in the shot put (41-11) and fourth in the javelin (135-9). Adam Mueller was second in the 300 intermediate hurdles (43.4) and third in the 110 high hurdles (16.5).
Billy Dean won the 100 dash (11.4) for Tyrone and was second in the triple jump (40-4 3/4) in addition to leading off the 400 relay. Trey Brockett won both the long jump (20-10 1/4) and the triple jump (42-6 3/4), and was fifth in the 200 (24.1). Adam Shaffer won the javelin with a toss of 159-0. Leonard Wilson was third in the 100 (11.8), sixth in the triple jump (38-11 1/2) and shot put (39-0) and Matthew Lauder was fourth in the long jump (19-3 1/2) and sixth in the 200 (24.7). Aaron Houck was fifth in the 1600 (5:03.4), Jason Reese was sixth in the high jump (5-2), and Terry Tate was fifth in the discus (112-0 1/2).
“This was the first time that Billy Dean has done the triple jump, although he jumped 40 feet last year, we have been holding him off due to some slight injuries,” explained Tyrone coach Tony Yaniello. “Trey Brockett is one of the best jumpers in the district and will probably get the second seed in the triple jump and is capable of a top three finish at districts in the long jump after getting his personal best in this meet.”
The Bellwood-Antis girls got a double win from Ashley Mueller ((100 dash and 100 intermediate hurdles) to lead the Lady Blue Devils, who won the league meet for the fourth straight year and have now won a record 17 times in the 27 years of girls’ league meets.
The B-A girls swept all three relays with Steph Hatch, Lauren Carter, Heather Greene and Mueller in the 400 relay, Carter, Jenna Ralston, Chelsea Wilson and Lauren Leap in the 1600 relay and Ralston, Arin Cherry, Becca Colyer and Sarah bell in the 3200 relay.
Bell also won the 3200 (13:28.5), Carter won the 300 low hurdles (49.57) and Hatch won the high jump (5-0). Mueller finished second in the 200 (27.92), just two-one hundredths of a second behind the winner (27.90). Ralston was third in both the 800 (2:44.4) and 1600 (6:09.7) and Hatch was third in both the long jump (15-9) and triple jump (32-0 1/2). Leap was third in the 400 (1:05.43) and the high jump (4-8) and fifth in the long jump (15-0 1/2). Lindsey Claar was second in the javelin (96-3) and sixth in the discus (79-8). Chelsea Wilson was fourth in the 400 (1:06.31) and fifth in the high jump (4-6).
“Winning all three relays was big for us,” said B-A girls coach Julie Roseborough. Our depth really helps and the girls work hard in practice for the relays. Lindsey Claar had a nice day placing in two events. That was a nice accomplishment for her. Ashley Mueller had a really great day with two wins and a second by just a couple hundredths of a second. We were able to place in every event except the shot put and got two placers in nine of the individual events.”
Emily Ingle won both the 800 (2:26.6) and the 1600 (5:49.2) to pace the Tyrone girls. Liz Tepsic was second in the triple jump (34-3 1/2) and 300 low hurdles (50.45) , third in the 110 intermediate hurdles (17.05) and fourth in the long jump (15-3) to collect four places for the Lady Eagles. Paige Black was sixth in the 400 (1:11.43), Emily Lloyd was fifth in the 110 hurdles (18.28). The Tyrone girls relay team finished fifth in the 400 relay with a time of 57.6.
“Emily Ingle had a great meet for us,” said Tyrone coach Tony Yaniello. “She won her two specialties. She has done a good job and is right on track for getting ready for states. Liz Tepsic has really been coming on in both hurdles. The coaches have made some adjustments and she has decreased her times dramatically. She had a personal best in the triple jump and is doing an outstanding job. Emily Lloyd is just now getting her strength back after illness and injury, and is slowly working her way back at what we hope is the right time for districts and states.”
