From the dynamic sounds of an 18-piece big band to the delightful fun of the old variety shows, area residents can enjoy two concerts this week in Tyrone.
The Fun Friday series continues on July 8 with “One Lane Bridge” appearing at 7 p.m. in the City Hotel Park.
Paulette and CW Shaw engage the audience in a blend of oldies and pop musical numbers entwined with costume changes and audience participation. This entertaining performance will remind people of the variety hours that used to dominate radio and television.
In the event of rain, Fun Friday concerts will be held in Joybeans Coffee Shop.
Tyrone’s premier concert series, Summer Sundays, kicks off July 10 with the energizing sound that only an 18-piece big band can provide. Located on the amphitheater stage in picturesque Reservoir Park, the “Keystone Society of Swing” big band will offer area residents a trip back in time as they perform a large repertoire of music from the 1930s to the 1950s.
Combining the classic arrangements of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie with some of the best from today’s foremost composers has been the trademark of this talented band.
The “Keystone Society of Swing” was organized in 1985 as a means to preserve the classic chart hits with kindred musicians. That original desire has led to the current band which performs throughout the Central Pennsylvania region. The musicians come from a variety of communities in Centre County and volunteer their time in order to preserve this unique part of musical heritage.
Summer Sunday concerts begin at 6 p.m. at the Reservoir Park Amphitheater.
Audience members should bring a blanket or chair for seating. In the event of rain, Summer Sunday concerts will be held in the Lutheran Church on Logan Avenue.
All summer concerts are free of charge and made possible by a grant from the PA Council on the Arts, a state agency, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency and Tyrone Borough.
