Richard E. Bateman, age 78, a resident of the Penn Hall Nursing Center Chambersburg, PA for over two years and formerly of 101 West Baltimore St. Greencastle for forty years, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2005 in the nursing center. Born June 23, 1927 in Tyrone, PA, he was the son of the late Clay and Minnie (Strohmeyer) Bateman. He was employed for thirty years at Mack Truck of Hagerstown, MD. He also had been a licensed barber in Tyrone, before moving to Greencastle.
Mr. Bateman was a member of the Calvary Bible Church of Greencastle. He was a member of the U.A.W. Local No. 171 of Hagerstown, MD, where he served as a union steward and committeeman. Mr. Bateman was also a member of the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post No. 373 and the Harry D. Ziegler VFW Post No. 6319, both of Greencastle.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.
In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting.
Surviving family are: wife, Jennie L. (Esterly) Bateman; daughters: Elaine L. Keller, Greencastle and Edna M. Hammond, Greencastle; son, Richard E. Bateman, Jr., Greencastle; brother, Joseph Bateman, Louisiana; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday morning, July 19, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. from the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, with Rev. Glen A. Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Burkett Cemetery in Warriors Mark, PA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening, July 18, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Union Rescue Mission Inc. 125 N. Prospect St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
