It may be summer vacation, but Pennsylvania libraries are still working to get kids reading.
While summertime does provide a break from the everyday routines of school, it is still important to keep children active, both physically and mentally.
To help keep students interested in reading, Pennsylvania libraries provide summer reading programs. This year’s theme is dragons, dreams and daring deeds.
Participating is fun and easy. Young children who are not readers will benefit from the program by increasing their vocabulary and discovering the significance of printed words. Hopefully they will grow a love of books from listening to others read stories to them.
Also, research has shown that school children who spend part of their summer reading are likely to maintain their reading skills when they return to school in the fall.
Continuing to read over summer vacation can help keep children on track and ready for the new school year.
As a part of the Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds reading program, the Bellwood-Antis Public Library is sponsoring Kid’s Week starting Monday, August 8. Programs will be held each evening, continuing through Thursday, August 11.
On Monday, August 8 at 7 p.m. John Andrews, a professional magician from Carlisle, will present the land of magical “make-believe”. It unfolds with a journey through fantasy and illusions. The magician makes the impossible (dreams and daring deeds) become reality. All will see that reading a book can do the same.
Ruth Conrad, from the Altoona Story League, will present stories about medieval times on Tuesday, August 9 at 7 p.m.
A special surprise is planned for Wednesday, August 10 at 7 p.m.
Finally, on Thursday, August 11 at 7 p.m. the Creature Teacher, Jody Wallace, and her live falcon, Striker, will present a play about medieval Falconry.
Kids will have the opportunity to be a part of the play.
Everyone is invited to dress in medieval costumes or come as they are for a week of fun at the Bellwood-Antis Public Library.
