The Tyrone community was shocked today to learn of the death of Neptune Fire Chief Ray Stringer as a result of an altercation last night in Nanty Glo.
The incident happened at the Nanty Glo VFW where Mr. Stringer was attending a firefighters convention.
Few details were available this morning regarding the incident. The Daily Herald learned through Nanty Glo Police Chief Richard Miller that the person believed to be responsible for Stringer’s death was in custody. He said Stringer was taken to Conemaugh Hospital in Cambria County. Miller was not able to confirm when Stringer died. He said the incident occurred after the conclusion of the convention.
Miller referred all other questions about the incident to the Cambria County District Attorney’s office. DA David Tulowitzki was unavailable for comment prior to press deadline.
The Cambria County Coroner’s office said an autopsy was scheduled for 10 a.m. this morning, but they could not provide any additional details until after the completion of the autopsy.
Tyrone Borough Manager Sharon Dannaway said she had only heard the preliminary information and could not offer an official statement this morning. She did say, “It’s sad that something like that had to happen to someone so young and with such great potential.”
Dannaway also noted Mr. Stringer had provided a great service to the community as chief of the Neptune Fire Company.
