As Tyrone residents continue to support victims of the recent hurricanes that hit the gulf coast, members of Christ United Methodist Church have joined in the effort.
Church members are putting together “flood buckets” that will be distributed for use during clean-up operations.
A list of items needed is printed in the church bulletin, requesting all types of cleaning products.
Items being collected include: Five gallon bucket with re-sealable lid, bleach (two one-quart or one 82 oz. bottle), five scouring pads, seven sponges, one scrub brush, 18 cleaning towels (reusable wipes), liquid laundry detergent (two 25 oz. or one 50 oz. bottle), one household cleaner (12-16 oz. bottle), disinfectant dish soap (16-28 oz. bottle), 50 clothes pins, and a clothes line (two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.).
Also, five dust masks, two pair of latex gloves, one pair of work gloves, a 24-bag roll of heavy duty trash bags (remove from box before placing in bucket), one insect repellent spray (9-14 oz. can) and one air freshener (8 or 9 oz. can).
Any products in aerosol cans must have a protective cap.
The church asks individuals to purchase specific sizes for shipping purposes. While a larger size might seem more helpful, it may not fit properly into the buckets and can create a problem when the items are shipped.
According to administrative assistant, Sue O’Brien, the collection of the flood buckets began with Mission Central in Mechanicsburg. She said many United Methodist churches throughout the area are collecting items to send to Louisiana and Mississippi to help with clean-up efforts.
O’Brien said church members will continue collecting the items while waiting for word from Mission Central to find out when the buckets can be sent.
The church is also putting together health kits, containing items such as washcloths, toothbrushes and Band-Aids and school kit items.
For individuals wishing to help but not wanting to put together a kit, monetary donations can be made to Mission Central. The money will go toward the purchase of relief kit supplies. It is requested that checks be marked for “relief kit supplies” so the most urgently needed materials can be purchased.
