Extra points proved to be the undoing of the Tyrone junior high football team in their battle at Gray-Vets Memorial Field on Thursday night. The Golden Eagles and Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders each scored three touchdowns, but BG converted a pair of two-point conversions, while Tyrone was able to convert just one PAT kick in a 22-19 loss to BG.
Josh Crowell rushed for 138 yards and two TDs on 19 carries to lead Tyrone. Levi Reihart added an 11-yard score and kicked the extra point after Crowell’s’ first-quarter TD.
After BG quarterback Chris Brown threw a five-yard TD strike to Bearer, Crowell broke a 42-yarder for the tying score and Reihart’s kick gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
Crowell scored again, from four yards out in the second quarter to extend Tyrone’s lead to 13-6. Still in the second quarter, BG used Brown’s arm to strike again. Brown connected on another five-yard TD pitch to Fiore and then passed to Bearer for the two-point PAT and a 14-13 BG lead.
In the third quarter, Brown used his legs to score, plunging one yard for a score and then passed to bearer again for the conversion to increase the Marauders lead to 22-13.
Tyrone added one more score in the fourth quarter when Reihart scored, but a try for two points on a run failed.
The hard-luck junior high Eagles, who fall to 1-6-1, have lost four games by a total of just 9 points.
“Our offense has been doing well, to get one runner to 138 yards and a few others chipping in with more yardage,” said Tyrone coach Dan Plummer. “All our games have been close, our defense just needs to buckle down and hold our opponents to one less touchdown or so and we could be having a different season. In the future, I think these kids will come together and figure out how to win. Right now, it’s frustrating
Tyrone will travel to Penns Valley on Thursday for the final game of the season. Kick-off will be at 6:30 p.m.
