The Tyrone swim teams opened their seasons with wins on Wednesday in the Tyrone Area pool.
The Tyrone boys team (1-0), with a pair of 10-win seasons in the last three years drilled Central Cambria 101-58 with Ethan Nulton leading the way firsts in both the 200 intermediate medley and the 100 backstroke. In the backstroke, Nulton, a sophomore, broke the school record with a time of 1:00.23. The old record of 1:01.02, was set by Jason Aults in 1994.
Nulton also was a member of the winning 200 Medley Relay team, along with Zac Yeaton, Matt Elder and Chris Bradigan.
Yeaton won the 100 breaststroke and also led off the victorious 200 free relay. Elder won the 100 butterfly and was on both winning relays. Bradigan added seconds in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
Dustin Elder won the 200 freestyle and anchored the 200 freestyle relay.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Randy Wilson, Dudley McNitt, Philip Kreckle and Tyler Thompson ended the match with a win.
The Lady Eagles (1-0), put a dismal 2004-05 season in which they failed to win a match (0-12) out of mind quickly by edging the Central Cambria girls 87-80 for their first win in nearly two years.
Despite small numbers again, the Tyrone girls received strong performances from Leah Cherry, Kelly Pearson and Paige Black. Each won two individual events and was on two winning relays.
Cherry won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, Pearson took both the 200 intermediate medley and the 100 back, and Black won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Tyrone won the 200 free relay and 400 free relay with the trio being joined by Zoe Yeaton on both relays. Yeaton also won the 100 butterfly and was second in the 100 breaststroke. Brittney Day placed second in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. The team of Selena Bradigan, Day, Kassie Markel and Amber Davis placed second in the 400 free relay.
The next action for the swim teams will be Monday, Dec. 12 at home against Central. The meet will begin at 6 p.m.
