Magisterial District Judge Fred Miller announced on Friday that the preliminary hearing for murder suspect Nathan Shaw has been continued until late January.
Shaw is accused of murdering six-year-old Jared Klein of Tyrone and raping the boy’s mother on Dec. 26. The 25-year-old man was charged with those crimes and several other offenses earlier this week after his return from Oklahoma.
Shaw was apprehended in Kay County, OK two days after the Tyrone crimes after a high-speed chase. He crashed a stolen car and led police on a brief foot pursuit before surrendering.
Shaw was brought back to Pennsylvania on a parole violation. A private transport company hired by the state picked Shaw up in Oklahoma on Jan. 6 and he arrived back in Pennsylvania on Tuesday. Tyrone Police arrested Shaw after he was taken to SCI Houtzdale upon his return to Pennsylvania.
After his arraignment on Tuesday night he was taken to Blair County Prison and held without bail. A preliminary hearing was originally set for next Tuesday. Miller said the hearing was continued on his motion.
The hearing will be held at the Blair County Courthouse instead of Judge Miller’s office in Snyder Township. Miller told The Daily Herald he worked with the court administrator to have use of a courtroom that day. Judge Miller will preside over the preliminary hearing.
It is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 27.
Since the boy’s death and the crimes against his mother, the Tyrone community has offered its support to the family and reached out to others affected by the events.
Officials at the boy’s school, St. Matthew Elementary, offered counseling for both parents and students. It also offered a program earlier this week about domestic violence.
A benefit dance for Klein’s mother will be held this evening from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Hookie’s Fire Department in Tyrone.
