Richard Joseph “Dick” Wirtner, Sr., 82, formerly of Nealmont, and a resident of the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home for the past five years, died Tuesday evening, February 14, 2006 at the Altoona Regional Health System-Altoona Hospital Campus.
He was born December 30, 1923 at Johnstown, a son of Modestus and Thelma (Bradley) Wirtner.
He was married August 10, 1949 at Winchester, Va. to Gloria J. Edmondson.
He is survived by his wife in Tyrone, a daughter Cathy Saylor and her husband William; sons Richard J. Wirtner, Jr. and his wife Lori and Paul G. Wirtner and his wife Beverly, all of Tyrone; eight grandchildren: William Saylor, Jr. (Betty Jo) and Kristy D. Koch (James) of Altoona; Travis Wirtner and friend Jenny of Warriors Mark; Tyler Wirtner and friend Jill of Tyrone RD3; Jonathan and Bradley Wirtner and Mathew and Ryan Wirtner all at home; three great-grandchildren: Andrew Koch, Ashlynn Koch and Brittany Pfhler and a sister, Phyllis Johnson (Robert) of Tyrone.
He was preceded in death by a sister Betty Pizar.
He was a graduate of Tyrone High School in 1942 and a member of the Tyrone American Legion Post 281 for over 60 years. He was a former founding member of the Deep-Well Hunting Camp and a member of the Disabled Veterans Organization. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was an Army Veteran of WWII.
He retired from Westvaco Corp., Tyrone in 1986 as a Super Calendar Operator after 31 years service.
Funeral services and flag presentation service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 17, 2006 at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with Rev. T.M. Talbot-Moses officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park.
Friends will be received at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour before the service on Friday.
