Blair Senior Services and Altoona Regional Health System are hosting the 26th Annual Senior Health Fair at the Jaffa Mosque, located at Broad Avenue and 22nd Street in Altoona, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5.
More than 50 exhibitors will offer a wide variety of health-related information, demonstrations and screenings.
“There is no cost for admission, and all area seniors are encouraged to attend to find out more about the many helpful ways to improve their health and wellness,” according to Mike Smith, Blair Senior Services Community Service Worker.
Free giveaways and door prizes will be available to attendees.
Highlighting this year’s fair will be exhibitors demonstrating and discussing healthy heart choices. Randy Grabill, Clinical Dietitian with the Altoona Regional Health System, will be a featured guest speaker discussing \”Eating For A Healthy Heart.” To register for this program, call the Altoona Regional Health System’s Healthy Living Club at 889-2630.
A 36-test blood screening, which includes tests that may assist in the early detection of common health risks facing adults in our region, is available for a fee of $34. Men may also register for a prostate screening for a fee of $20. All test results will be forwarded to your personal medical provider. A 12-hour fast is required before the blood work. Adults of any age may register for this reasonably-priced screening service by calling 949-4255.
A new feature of the fair this year is a car/booster seat safety inspection provided by \”Safe Kids Blair County.\” A drive-up inspection station will be located in the Jaffa parking lot. Experts will be on hand to evaluate car/booster seats for installation and recalls, and to answer questions. A checkup takes only about five minutes and could save the life of a child.
After the fair, participants are invited to the Blair Senior Service Center at 1320 12th Avenue, Altoona to enjoy a lunch of tater-crusted fish, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes and an apple. Donations are accepted. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Blair Senior Services, Inc. at 946-1235 no later than Thursday, March 30. Following lunch, stay and enjoy dancing, or just listening to musical entertainment by Rich Hagens from 1 to 3 p.m. There is a $1 donation per person for the dance.
Transportation will be available to and from the Fair, and also from the Fair to the Center for lunch and entertainment. To arrange for transportation, call Blair Senior Services’ Transportation Department at 695-3500 no later than Thursday, March 30.
