The Altoona Curve baseball team’s home opener may be a while off, but mascot Diesel Dawg is signed up for some competition of a different sort.
Diesel had his photo taken for a special contest to benefit the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society.
The “Dawg” will be entered into the shelter’s “Picture Perfect Pet” calendar contest and be competing for a spot on the 2007 calendars produced by the humane society, according to CPHS executive director, Dave Hopkins.
Altoona photographer Ray Kauffman snapped some portrait shots of Diesel that will be used to solicit donations on his behalf. The Curve will be collecting donations at some home games to help Diesel in his bid for a calendar spot.
Last year, the calendar campaign raised over $20,000 to help homeless animals at the shelter. People interested in having their pets on the calendar should contact the shelter for more information.
Deadline for entry is April 15.
In other CPHS news, pet owners are being invited to a special low-cost rabies clinic hosted by the humane society and the Nittany Chapter North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association.
The event is scheduled to take place at the CPHS shelter located at 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona from noon until 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 2.
The rabies vaccine shots will cost $10 and are good for one year.
All pets must be on a leash or in a carrier. Dogs and cats will be vaccinated. Dog owners must provide proof of license, and dog licenses can be purchased on site.
The clinic will reserve the right to refuse vaccinating sick or aggressive pets.
No appointments for the rabies clinic are necessary, and the shots will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
