Tyrone’s two talented freshmen, Teanna Kobuck and Laura Thompson combined their efforts for the Lady Eagles’ softball team to pull out a 1-0 win at Lewistown on Thursday afternoon. Kobuck drove in the only score of the game and Thompson tossed a four-hit shutout to pick up the Lady Eagles’ second win of the 2006 campaign.
In the top of the second inning, Stefani Bryan hit a leadoff triple for the Tyrone girls, and Kobuck followed with a single to score Bryan for what thanks to Thompson’s effort on the mound, was all the Lady Eagles would need to halt a three-game losing streak and improve their record to 2-3.
Lewistown had runners on base in every inning, but Thompson’s pitching and some very good Tyrone defense kept any Lewistown runners from crossing home plate.
In the bottom of the third, Condron hit a pop up to Lady Eagle Ashley Ripka at shortstop for the first out. Reynolds walked but Gearhart hit a line drive to Ripka, who caught the ball and threw to first to complete the double play.
In the bottom of the fourth, Lewistown leadoff batter Stott walked, but was thrown trying to advance to third base. Boiler hit a ground ball to Thompson who threw to first for the second out, and Fetter flied out to Ashley Pennabaker in center field for the final out.
Then In the bottom of the fifth, Hower flied out to Kobuck in left to start the inning. Condron walked and Reynolds reached on an error by the pitcher Thompson, to put runners on first and second. Gearhart hit a grounder to Ripka at short, who tagged the runner going to third base and threw to Lindsey Christine at first, to complete the double play and get out of the inning.
“We played great defense and everyone contributed to the win,” said Tyrone softball coach. “It was a day where we always seems to be at the right place at the right time. Lewistown hit some hard balls but we always found a way to make a play and not let them score.”
The Lady Eagles will play today, weather permitting against Bishop Guilfoyle at the Garfield field in Altoona, with the first pitch set for 4:30 p.m.
