The Tyrone elementary basketball program has once again shown their stuff against all opponents and come home with the trophy to prove their mettle.
Over the week of March 24-31, the Tyrone entry participated in the Summit March Madness Tournament. This was an elementary tournament for third and fourth grade boys and was a double elimination tournament. The Tyrone third and fourth graders defeated all comers to bring home the first place trophy.
The boys defeated five teams on their way to the championship game, without a loss.
Tyrone had defeated Scott Degol Auto, the Altoona entry, two days earlier by 16 points, but when facing the same team in the finals it was a different story. Scott Degol Auto fought their way back through a tough losers’ bracket to meet the Tyrone elementary basketballers again.
After four solid quarters of basketball, the victor was still in doubt.
With the game already in overtime, in the rematch, and Tyrone down by one point with 3.1 seconds to go and forced to go the length of the court, Tyrone broke from a timeout with a last chance play.
Jordon Miller executed a perfect 70-foot pass to Brandon Gripp who turned and threw up a last-ditch three-pointer as time expired that hit nothing but net as the buzzer sounded to clinch the victory and the championship.
It was a perfect ending and a total team effort from every one of the boys who have worked so hard all year long.
