Mrs. Elizabeth M. “Betty” Carruthers, 87, a guest of Valley View Home, formerly of Bellwood, died Friday, April 28, 2006 at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus.
She was born in Altoona on August 26, 1918, a daughter of the late Charles F. and Marian (Smith) Fonner. She married Arthur Carruthers on Jan. 27, 1940 in Altoona. He died June 5, 1993.
Surviving are her children: David A. and wife, Marsha of Littlestown, John H. and wife Sue of Bellwood, Susan E. Bollinger and husband John of Sinking Valley, and Charles T. and wife, Colleen of Altoona; grandchildren: Geri Beth Chavez, Nicole and Courtney Carruthers, Jackie and Becky Bollinger and Chad Carruthers; great-grandchildren: Lindsay, Jessica, Noelle and Hannah Chavez and Dylan Carruthers.
Mrs. Carruthers was the last of her immediate family.
She was a 1936 graduate of Altoona High School.
Mrs. Carruthers was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Bellwood.
She retired from the bakery department at the former IGA store in Bellwood and also owned and operated a beauty shop in her home.
Betty enjoyed playing cards and doing crafts with her friends and neighbors. She also enjoyed flowers and watching golf and football.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2 at the Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Rupp officiating.
Interment will be at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Betty’s memory may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Bellwood.
