It was a cold, damp Tuesday at the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Complex in Tyrone, and the weather set the tone for the day’s softball match between Tyrone and Mount Union. While the morale never stopped, even when the rain became steady, the Lady Eagles simply couldn’t hold off a strong Lady Trojan offense which led to a 10-3 loss for Tyrone.
Beginning with a pair of runs by Mount Union in the first inning, the game started strong for the Lady Eagles when they tied the contest with two runs in the bottom of the second by Kim Cherry and Stefani Bryan, both knocked in by designated player Casie Glashauser. However, Tyrone seemed to let down their guard at this point, allowing the Mounties to step up and score multiple times.
The Lady Eagles held Mount Union off until the fourth inning, the Lady Trojans outscored Tyrone scored 8-1 over the final four innings.
Mount Union scored twice with third baseman Beth Smith and first baseman Krisha Feathers crossing the plate. Again at the top of the fifth, Mount Union’s Martina Kurtz and Kaylie Morrison scored, bringing the score to 6-2.
Tyrone experienced some pitching difficulties, substituting Stefani Bryan for Laura Thompson in the top of the fifth. During the sixth inning, Mount Union scored four runs following doubles by Toyia Price, Emily Brown and Smith.
As the end of the game quickly drew near, Tyrone was able to prevent off any additional runs by Mount Union and scored a final run from substitute Shannon Shultz. While the Lady Eagles fought hard, it just wasn’t enough to stop the rain. The final score was Mount Union 10, Tyrone 3.
Head Coach Lois Loncher commented on her team’s performance.
“We were in the game,” said Loncher. “Once the rain started, we had some trouble getting the ball across the plate. That’s part of the game. It’s just frustrating that the momentum was on our side and when the rain came it got switched. What can you say?”
Megan Turiano had two singles for the Lady Eagles, including a double that was Tyrone’s only extra-base hit, Casie Glashauser drove in two runs and Brooke Garbinsky had one RBI.
Brown, Smith and Crouse each had a pair of base hits for Mount Union and Carrie Knepp had three.
Ashley Kitting picked up the win for Mount Union (8-4) scattering eight hits, with two walks and no strikeouts.
Tyrone (3-7) will play Bishop Guilfoyle today at Garfield Field in Altoona with the first pitch set for 4:30 p.m.
