The annual Tyrone Area Community Day is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 4 at DelGrosso’s Amusement Park in Tipton.
The day will feature free waterworks, rapids and rides for Tyrone area youth courtesy of Albemarle. All pre-school, elementary, junior and senior high school youth (through 2006 graduation) in the Tyrone area are invited. Bracelets will be distributed from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the red and white tent next to the main ticket plaza, adjacent to Murf’s patio.
Park President Peter Gardella said, “It’s a nice tradition that we’d like to keep alive. We want to keep that day going and growing.”
Over the years, DelGrosso’s Amusement Park had hosted a WTRN/YMCA day. With the demise of the Tyrone YMCA in 2004, the day was retitled “Tyrone Area Community Day” in 2005. Committee members from the Tyrone community have been working for the last several months to put together this year’s event.
This year’s community day will feature two new events.
First, there will be a Star Search starting at 6 p.m. There will be several divisions including preschool through fourth grade, fifth grade through eighth grade, ninth through 12th grade, adults up to age 40, adults over 40 and groups (three or more). For more information, contact Jim Kilmartin at “Star Search Headquarters” at 684-2032. Entry deadline for Star Search is July 28.
Also new this year is the Hometown Raffle. This is a chance for visitors at the park to win art produced by talented friends and neighbors. Items may be submitted in person to The Daily Herald offices located at 1067 Pennsylvania Avenue in downtown Tyrone during regular business hours starting on July 5. Deadline for items to be submitted is July 28. The raffle will be conducted at the conclusion of Star Search.
Area artists and crafters are being urged to participate in this event. The proceeds from the raffle will be used to fund future activities for The Tyrone Community Day at DelGrosso’s Amusement Park.
The Tyrone Area Community Day will also feature a Championship Golf Tournament open to youth grades kindergarten to 12th grade. The tournament presented by Joshua House starts at 10 a.m.
A chicken barbecue dinner will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tickets will be sold in advance at The Daily Herald offices, the Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce, DelGrosso’s Amusement Park office and through the Kiwanis Club members. Tickets are $7. Dinners will be served at the park. The date when tickets will go on sale will be announced at a later time.
The Tyrone Area Community Day will also feature community booths in shed no. 2 at the park and other activities.
Also this year, Epworth Manor will be providing afternoon transportation to the park from Tyrone for individuals and guests of individuals whom reside at Epworth Manor, the Pennsylvania House and Tyrone Housing Apartments with returning transportation from the park to Tyrone in the evening.
