Tyler Gillmen picked up two wins on the mound, knocked in a game-winning run in the Tyrone Legion’s first win of the night and scored the final run in their second win.
The Legion picked up two wins in one night after not recording one since June 17th. In the first game, the completion of a suspended 12-12 match-up against Park Furniture, Gillmen doubled with two outs to drive in Justin Schopp, who had also doubled. Tyler Golden retired Park Furniture in order in the bottom of the inning to record his first save and give Tyrone a 13-12 triumph.
“We got some really good pitching today,” Tyrone Legion Manager Mike Boytim said. “Golden went 3-0 to the first batter he faced, but worked back and got him to ground out which set the tone for the solid easy inning, and Gillmen was completely dominant in the second game and probably should have had a shutout.”
Although he didn’t register the shutout, Gillmen did help the Tyrone Legion to an 11-1 victory in the second game against Park Furniture by striking out 10 in a complete game victory.
Schopp drove in three runs, and Jamie Levinson and Jesse Hertzler brought home tow of their own in the romp. Nine of the Tyrone Legion’s 11 runs were scored with two outs.
Levinson and Hertzler both notched two-run singles in the first inning, and Tyrone added three more in the fourth inning after David Rodland was hit by a pitch with two outs.
With the bases loaded, Andy Ashcroft worked a bases loaded walk to drive in Rodland, and Schopp followed with a two-run single. The second run, scored by Cory Perry, was made possible by an excellent slide on the part of Perry to avoid a play at the plate.
Park Furniture scored a run in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a bloop single by Brian Hostler to extend the game, but Shayne Tate singled in Gillmen with one out in the bottom of the fifth for the walk-off win.
“After not playing for over a week, I was a little bit worried about us being rusty,” Boytim said. “But we played our most polished baseball of the season, committing no errors in the one inning of the first game and the entire second game.”
In the first game, which began June 9th, Park Furniture led 8-5 heading into the top of the sixth inning, but the Tyrone Legion rapped five hits, walked twice and were hit by a pitch while scoring seven runs to take a four run lead in an inning highlighted by a two-run Levinson double.
Park Furniture cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, and after Tyrone left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, Chris Sweeney hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.
Before the game could head to extra innings, it was called due to darkness.
With the wins, the Tyrone Legion improved their record to 8-6 after having four straight games postponed due to rain.
Tyrone will be trying for their ninth win today when they host Sheetz at 6 p.m.
Sprankle’s Auto Outlet Notes: Tyler Hoover went 0-0 in the first game and drew five walks. He walked in his first plate appearance of the second game to raise his season total to a team-high 13…. Levinson’s two RBI brought his season total to 20… Pinch hitters Cory Perry, David Rodland, and Andy Ashcroft went a combined 0-0 with two walks, a hit by pitch, scored three runs, and registered a RBI.
