Mr. William H. “Bump” Yarnell, age 85, a former Tyrone resident, died Saturday, July 8, 2006 at Cottage Grove, Oregon, following a brief illness. He was born December 30, 1920 in Tyrone, the son of Harrison A. and Agnes Brisbin Yarnell. On July 14, 1950 he was married to Joan Ross of Claysburg at the Rectory of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Newry.
He is survived by his wife and three sons – Ross of Billings, MT; Barry and wife Betty of Brea, CA; and Terry and wife Karen of Victorville, CA and four grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters – Sue Barr of Tyrone and Jean, wife of Marlin Sawyer of Pleasant Hills, PA. Also surviving is one niece and four nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jackson Yarnell.
Mr. Yarnell was a 1938 graduate of Tyrone High School where he was an outstanding football player and received the annual Blanket Award as the outstanding player on the 1937 team. He was a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 28 and attended the first boy Scout National Jamboree in Washington, DC in 1937. He attended Kiski Prep School, and, after serving as an armorer in the Army Air Force during World War II, he resumed his education. He was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. Degree in Dairy Manufacturing. He was employed as a superintendent by Warner Pharmaceutical Company and in 1963 was transferred by his company to California. He retired in 1982.
Memorial gifts in Mr. Yarnell’s name may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
