After two innings of relative peace, in the semifinal series between Martin Oil and ReMax Realty, a heck of a baseball game broke out.
ReMax scored first, putting four runs on the scoreboard. Nic Perehinec brought in two runs with a single, and Chris Tromm and John Lawlor each drove in a run with a sacrifice.
Martin Oil came right back with a five-spot to go on top 5-4 in the top of the fourth, only to see ReMax counter that with a 15-hitter, 12-run bottom of the fourth and a 16-5 advantage.
Chad Coho singled to begin the Martin Oil half of the fourth. Blaze Winterstein walked, but the next two batters bounced out and struckout to make it two down and still no one had crossed home plate. Troy Brunner walked to load the bases, before Chris Alley and Dustin Harris belted back-to-back triples. Alley’s three-bagger cleared the bases, and then the Harris triple got Alley home with the tying run. Another extra-base hit, an Earnie Kelley double, scored Harris to give Martin Oil a 5-4 advantage.
ReMax showed why they recorded the best record during the regular season (18-2), by coming right back to put the game pretty much out of reach. John Snyder ripped a three-run double, and Pat Tomassetti and Nate Williams each drove in a pair to highlight the 12-run explosion.
Faced with losing by the 10-run Mercy Rule, Martin Oil bounced right back to score four times in the fifth to keep the ballgame rolling.
Alex Miller singled to start the frame, Garrett Rabold and Troy Brunner banged singles, with Brunner’s bingle scoring Miller. With nobody out, ReMax brought in their third pitcher of the night, Brent Milliron. Chris Alley was hit by a pitch, before Harris scored Rabold with a sacrifice fly, and Coho singled with two down to score Brunner and Alley.
ReMax put the game away in the bottom of the sixth by scoring three times to end the contest.
Tomassetti singled, Snyder walked and Veckov doubled to score Tomassetti and send Snyder to third base. Perehinec’s sac fly scored Snyder and with two outs Lawlor drove one to the wall to score Veckov with the game-ending run.
Tomassetti led ReMax with four singles in five trips to the plate, Snyder was three-for-three and Adam Veckov and Nic Perenhinec each had two hits. The top four in the ReMax lineup was a collective 11-for-15 with 12 runs scored. Max Sheedy added a two-for-four night from the number nine spot in the lineup, as ReMax pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of six walks, two errors and two hit batters by a total of four Martin Oil pitchers.
Jeff Vaughn picked up the win in relief for ReMax, but needed help from Brent Milliron, after Martin Oil scored four times in the fifth inning to make it interesting.
Earnie Kelley, Chad Coho and Garrett Rabold each had two hits for Martin Oil.
Martin Oil will play ReMax today at 5:30 p.m. at Vets Field in game two of the best-of-three semifinals series, needing a win to continue the series to game three on Wednesday.
