The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and Partners in Agricultural Safety and Health of the Alleghenies, have a special day camp planned in August. All the events are centered around safety.
Area youth are invited to attend the Farm/Home Safety Day Camp, for ages seven to 16, which is scheduled for Friday, August 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Sinking Valley Fairgrounds.
The purpose of the program is to teach the safe use of agricultural equipment through live demonstrations.
The Blair County Farm Bureau explains in its newsletter that the farm is many things to rural children, it’s their home, their playground and often their workplace.
But, there are also many hazards associated with it. To help children understand these hazards, the Farm/Home Safety Day Camp has been organized with help from various local businesses.
There will be five sessions throughout the day with a 25 minute break. Lunch will be served at the conclusion of the sessions. At 12:30 the day will wrap up with the Conemaugh Regional Trauma Center MedStar helicopter.
Topics that will be covered throughout the day include tractor rollovers and PTO entanglements, water safety, pesticides and animal safety, bike safety and fire safety.
Sponsors for this event include PASHA, AgrAbility for Pennsylvanians, Altoona Regional Health System, Blair County Farm Bureau, Conemaugh Regional Trauma Center, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, Southcentral PA AHEC and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
The cost for registration is $3 per child or $5 per family. Registration includes a snack, lunch and handouts and must be received by August 4.
Registration forms can be obtained by calling Sarah Jane Long at 684-4379 or Joseph Diamond at 941-0782 or at local agribusinesses.
