Snyder Township Supervisors and officials from Tyrone Area School District have been working together for months on the issue of police jurisdiction for Hospital Road and Clay Avenue near the Tyrone Area School District buildings.
Police coverage is being sought specifically during the time of student arrival in the morning and dismissal in the afternoon. The area in question is not on school property but in Snyder Township.
A policeman employed by the school would be able to deal with such problems as students smoking, littering and loitering.
Supervisors could not act on the jurisdiction issue at Monday’s township meeting because the school district and the township are still in the process of finding an insurance policy to accommodate the plan.
At previous township meetings, supervisors indicated they wanted to have the agreement in place by the first day of school.
Also at Monday’s meeting, officials from the Bald Eagle Fire Company notified the public that they will be conducting fire inspections of businesses in the township. The purpose of the inspections is so that the firefighters can familiarize themselves with the surroundings of the businesses in case of an emergency.
Firefighters will have identification and will ask for permission to go into the businesses before conducting any inspections.
Also at the meeting, there was some discussion between supervisors and the public regarding reimbursement for the certification of Bob Ayers as a building codes official.
A petition with signatures opposing the approval was presented to the supervisors at the meeting.
Supervisor Jim Burket said he wanted to get a better understanding of the issue before the supervisors made a motion, so the issue was tabled until a future meeting.
