This weekend, September 8, 9, 10 Boy Scouts and Venture Crews from the Tyrone area will gather at their beloved Camp Anderson to celebrate Scouting in Tyrone.
Boy Scouts and Venture Crews from Troop 103 (Bald Eagle United Methodist Church), Troop 104 (Warriors Mark United Methodist Church), Troop 20 (Church of the Good Shepherd UMC) and Troop 300 (St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church) will gather for a weekend of Scout activities to help demonstrate their Scout skills, as well as their leadership skills.
Boy Scouting has been the longest active youth program in the Tyrone area, with many of the area’s senior citizens reflecting on the great times they had as a youth at Camp Anderson. Older Scouts often recall the trains that ran up the grade to Osceola Mills, and the engineers tossing out “Scoutmaster matches” (railroad flares) much to the delight of the troops. Veteran Scouts remember the many pranks of putting the sleeping Scouts into VanScoyoc Creek, cots and all! For many in Tyrone, Camp Anderson was an extension of their backyard – a familiar place where fun and fellowship happened as they grew up in the Tyrone Scouting program. Many of Tyrone’s most successful men had their leadership training under the watchful eye of their Scoutmasters at Camp Anderson.
The Scoutmasters of Tyrone’s four Scout troops invite all former Scouts and supporters to Camp Anderson on Saturday, September 9 anytime after 10 a.m. The field will be full of Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts working on various skills and outdoor activities. There will be a display of Scouting history of Tyrone in the Dining Hall. Lunch will be available from all of the Scout Troops. Lunch will be free if you bring a bit of Scout nostalgia such as your old uniform, books, patches, pictures, or even a good Scout story.
Come to Camp Anderson on Saturday, September 9 anytime after 10 a.m., to relive those wonderful memories of youth as a Boy Scout, or as your many years of dedication as a financial supporter or an adult leader.
