The Tyrone Area School Board voted last night to renew the contract of the district’s longtime superintendent, Dr. William N. Miller.
His new contract will begin on July 1, 2007 and end on June 30, 2010. The school board motion on the contract noted the agreement would continue in its present form with the exception of yearly salary increases, which will be adjusted for the remainder of the contract by a cost of living adjustment. The adjustment is based on the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics for all urban consumers from December to December for the U.S. city average.
After last night’s meeting, Dr. Miller talked about his decision to agree to stay with the district.
“I had seriously planned to retire at the end of this existing three year contract, which expires in June 2007,” said Dr. Miller. “In the last month or two, I had struggled with some withdrawal anxiety, in terms of departing from this nuclear family.
“I’ve been committed to this district for 35 years as superintendent,” said Dr. Miller. “I had begun to reconsider…and I just had a commitment to the district.”
Business manager Cathy Peachey said after some discussion, the school board approached Dr. Miller about staying with the district.
Dr. Miller’s 35 years is the longest-running tenure for any superintendent in the state of Pennsylvania.
Last month, during the dedication ceremonies for the middle school addition/renovation project, Dr. Miller was recognized for his efforts, not only on the project, but also as Tyrone’s long-time superintendent. He was presented with a portrait and the new building was dedicated to him.
During the last several years of Dr. Miller’s service, the district had undertaken and completed several building and renovation projects included the latest middle school additions/renovations, a new Tyrone Area Elementary School, a previous middle school project, the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Park and the rededication of Grey Veterans Memorial Field. The combined total of the projects was $39,380,582.
