Nathan T. Shaw, the man accused of killing six-year-old Jared Klein in Tyrone on the day after Christmas last year has been moved from the Blair County Prison to SCI Houtzdale after he allegedly assaulted an officer at the Hollidaysburg lockup last Monday.
A media liaison at SCI Houtzdale, Doretta Chencharick, said the 25-year-old Shaw is now being housed at the Houtzdale location according to information on the state’s Department of Corrections Web site’s inmate locator. SCI Houtzdale opened in 1996 and is a medium security facility for men located in Clearfield County.
Sergeant David Gehret of the Hollidaysburg Police Department confirmed that an incident that happened last Monday at Blair County Prison is being investigated by his department. He said the case involving the assault of the prison officer is being reviewed by the Blair County DA’s office. Gehret said it was likely charges would be filed at a later date. No one from the DA’s office was available this morning to comment about the latest investigation regarding Shaw.
He was arrested on murder and other charges in January of this year. Shaw was apprehended in Kay County, OK two days after the murder of the young Tyrone boy after a high-speed chase.
Authorities in Oklahoma held Shaw on $1 million bond for several days before agreeing to allow his return to Pennsylvania on a parole violation. Shaw was charged with murder on the day of his return to Pennsylvania on January 10.
He was held without bail at Blair County Prison after his arraignment and was remanded to Blair County Prison after a preliminary hearing in late January. A notice of aggravated circumstances was filed in the case on March 3. Shaw plead not guilty to the charges at his formal arraignment that same day.
In addition to facing the death penalty in the murder case, Shaw also faces charges of assaulting the boy’s mother at the Pennsylvania Avenue apartment where Klein’s murder took place.
No trial date in Shaw’s case has been scheduled as of this time.
