The Tyrone tennis team hosted the Central girls on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at the Clay Avenue courts and then traveled to Huntingdon for a match on Wednesday.
In the home match against Central, the Lady Dragons prevailed 5-2 in match that was actually closer than the final score indicated.
Brittany Harker won her number three singles match defeating Katelyn Piper in a marathon match 6-3, 7-5, with nearly all of the points going back and forth and back and forth, before finally Harker pulled out the well-deserved win.
The Lady Eagles number two doubles team composed of Ashley Hamer and Kayli Gray defeated their opponents as well knocking off Yvette Brumbaugh and Katelyn Hammond by an 8-2 score.
We were very competitive in this match,” said Tyrone tennis coach Mike Hample. “We had a lot of very good matches in this one, we even had chances to win the match, but fell just short in several individual matches that were well played, even though we couldn’t quite pull them out.”
On Wednesday at Huntingdon, the evident difference was the experience of the Lady Bearcats, who return all of last year’s starters. Huntingdon defeated the Tyrone girls 7-0, with the Lady Eagles winning just a total of two games during the singles competition and three during the doubles.
“Huntingdon has a seasoned, veteran team and that made the difference against our young girls,” said Hample. “Chelsey Swayne at number one singles and Amy Lewis at number four, in particular played very well against their opponents.
