The Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce is scheduled to present its latest Lunch-n-Learn, which is a great opportunity for a delicious meal, informative speakers and a chance to network with business people in the community.
The event will be held Tuesday, October 17 at Burley’s Restaurant from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The presentation entitled “Deep Brain Stimulation: New Hope for Parkinson’s Disease” will be given by Julie Rice-Decker.
Julie is a native of Tyrone and a 1982 graduate of Tyrone Area High School. She entered into advanced study in nursing and graduated from the Altoona Hospital School of Nursing in 1985 and is presently a student at Mount Aloysius College. In addition to 20 years of working in the intensive care unit at Altoona Hospital as a staff RN, she has been a clinical preceptor, staff educator and member of numerous policy committees.
Julie is currently employed as a rehab liaison with Healthsouth Rehab Hospital of Altoona where she is a member of the cardiac team as well as inpatient cardiac educator. Julie brings to the facility an extensive knowledge-base of cardiac care and issues and has spoken to numerous organizations on the care of the congestive heart failure patient as well as the effect of heart disease on women. She has worked with the American Heart Association of Blair County in stroke screens as well as educational forums.
She resides in Hollidaysburg with her husband and their two children.
At the Lunch-n-Learn, Julie will discuss how over 1,000,000 Americans suffer from Parkinson’s Disease. She will talk about direct health-related expenses, indirect disability expenses and lost productivity in the U.S. amounting to $25 billion annually. Another point of interest will include discussing Activa® Therapy, which is designed to control some of the primary motor symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease used as an adjunctive or complementary treatment for approximately 100,000 patients in the advanced stages of the disease.
