The summer may be winding down, but Joshua House Juniors summer day camp program is still running strong. This year, the summer program has a new theme – “Super Powers”. Throughout the camp, children are getting to know themselves as super heroes. Yes, super heroes. The children are learning that they, too, have amazing powers to help the community around them. Focusing on the super powers of hope, love, joy, and prayer, the juniors go out into the community each Thursday to spread the week’s super power. One community service project lead them through the downtown streets of Tyrone picking up trash, hoping and praying for Tyrone to be beautifully clean when their children walk the downtown streets in years to come. An ongoing service project includes taking care of a garden – weeding, watering, and monitoring plant growth.
Aside from spreading their super powers, campers also enjoy other activities throughout the week. Each Monday and Wednesday, the juniors go to the Tyrone pool for some fun in the sun. On Tuesdays, campers get creative with arts and crafts projects and preparing for their upcoming performance for parents and friends of the program. But the highlight of the week comes at the very end when the juniors leave the comforts of Joshua House for the adventure and excitement of “Fieldtrip Fridays”. Outings have included bowling at Splinters, hiking Mount Nittany, swimming at Canoe Creek, and cheering on the Altoona Curve.
The summer isn’t over yet! Upcoming fieldtrips include Lakemont Park on August 8. On the last day of camp, August 17, campers will dawn super hero costumes and perform a play about their super powers for their parents, friends, and supporters. New campers are welcome to join for the rest of the summer, or just for a day. Camp hours are as follows: Monday – Friday 7-9 a.m. Parent Drop-Off, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Organized Camp Hours, and 3:30-5 p.m. Parent Pick-Up.
Parents who are interested in sending their children for the remaining weeks or on specific days can contact the Juniors Director, Tommie Murray, at jhousejuniors@joshuahousetyrone.org. Also, many campers are still in need of financial support. If you are interested in helping a child come to camp for a day or a week, email Tommie or call 684-2032 and leave a message.
