According to a press release issued Thursday, Pennsylvania State Police announced that they are stepping up drunk-driving enforcement efforts throughout the state during the next several days in an effort to make Halloween safer for motorists, trick-or-treaters and other pedestrians.
Extra patrols and sobriety checkpoints are planned during what has become a time of particular concern for driving under the influence, the department said.
“What may start as a night of harmless Halloween fun can quickly become a nightmare if you choose to get behind the wheel after drinking,” said Tpr. David Andrascik, the department’s DUI coordinator. “Drinking and driving could land you in jail, the hospital or worse. If you are away from home and have been drinking, the only good decision you can make is to catch a ride with a sober driver.”
Andrascik said many local police departments plan to participate in community outreach activities and distribute informational coasters during the Halloween season. The public awareness campaign and increased enforcement efforts are part of a national Halloween DUI crackdown sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
