In recognition of American Education Week, the Tyrone Area School District is opening its doors to the community and offering citizens a chance to visit and view contemporary public education.
Visitation for the elementary, middle, and high schools is scheduled for Friday, November 17 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and again from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Parents, guardians and other community members who are interested in seeing what an average day is like at the Tyrone Area Schools are welcome to visit.
Individuals do not need to know a student, teacher or faculty member who is present during this time.
According to elementary school principal, Michelle Dutrow, “The purpose of the day is to offer something to the public during American Education Week. Also, it is a way to showcase the fabulous learning that is going on here at Tyrone.”
Those interested may enter the school’s main office on November 17. Individuals will be asked to sign in and will be given a visitor’s pass. If visitors know the teacher of a particular student, they may visit that classroom. Visitors may also choose to go to a classroom based on a certain subject or activity that is being taught at that time.
Dutrow said that some people may enjoy the visit just to see how much public education has changed in the last 10 years, especially in dealing with how to meet state standards and in test preparation. Teachers will follow the regular teaching schedule and curriculum to assure that visitors can observe a typical day in the District.
“We had a nice turn out last year and we received many positive comments about our staff, students, and facilities. We hope for an even larger turn out this year,” added Dutrow. “It’s one of the best ways for us to foster greater communication between the school and community.
“In this day and age, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to invite the public into the school building. We will have added security present as a precautionary measure,” explained Dutrow. “But we certainly want to make the public feel welcome at the schools. Everyone is encouraged to take an advantage of this unique opportunity.”
