Mr. Samuel N. Burnham, Jr., age 90, a guest at Epworth Manor, died Saturday, November 25, 2006 at 8:37 a.m. at the Altoona Regional Health Systems – Altoona Hospital Campus. He was born June 7, 1916 on Burnham farm near Birmingham, the son of S. Neal and Stella Bonner Burnham. He is survived by a sister, Mary B. Grossman and husband Warren of San Francisco, three nieces and two nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles F. Burnham and a sister Jane B. Hughes. He was a graduate of Tyrone High School class of 1934. When in high school he won a contest to name the sports teams of the high school. His winning name was the “Golden Eagles”. Following graduation he farmed for 20 years on the family farm then, for several years, was an employee at Engelman’s Greenhouse, and at O’Rourke’s Upholstery and Market. He retired in 1986 following 16 years of service with Huntingdon Developmental Workshop where he was instrumental in developing employment for mentally challenged young people. Sam had a keen and unique sense of humor. He had a little story or bit of wisdom to fit every situation. He was well liked by all who knew him and will be sadly missed. He was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Grange and BPOE No. 212.
Private service will be held at the convenience of the family with interment in Birmingham Cemetery. Contributions in his memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 102 W. 13th St., Tyrone, Pa. 16686.
