The Williamsburg shot chart was in need of cosmetic surgery heading into the fourth quarter of the Williamsburg Holiday Basketball Tournament championship Saturday against Tyrone.
Through three quarters, the Lady Pirates had made just 11 of 41 shots, making for a stat sheet that could only be described as ugly. Williamsburg was ahead 35-30, but as a result of its shooting was unable to distance itself from the Lady Eagles.
But the fourth quarter was a different story. Over the final 6:04, Williamsburg drained 5 of its 9 shots from the floor, including three three-pointers, and the Lady Pirates outscored Tyrone 18-9 to win 53-39.
The loss dropped Tyrone to 3-8 as it prepares to begin the second half of MAC play this week.
While Williamsburg found its stroke down the stretch, the Lady Eagles struggled from the floor. Tyrone made just 3 of 17 shots in the fourth quarter, at one point going more than four minutes without hitting a basket.
Tyrone trailed 37-32 after an offensive put-back by Liz Tepsic, but Williamsburg responded with a three-pointer by Amy Speacht – one of 11 three-pointers total for the Lady Pirates – to start a 14-4 run opened the spread to 51-35 by the 2:27 mark.
The Lady Eagles finished the game making 14 of 46 shots, while the Lady Pirates finished 16 of 50.
Tepsic led the Lady Eagles with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Tyrone led 5-3 early in the first quarter, but the Lady Eagles were unable to overcome a barrage of three-pointers by Williamsburg against their man-to-man defense. The Lady Pirates made three from beyond the arc in the first quarter to lead 13-6 and two more in the second, when they built a 23-19 halftime lead.
Danielle Peck and Brooke Zimmerman spearheaded Williamsburg assault from deep, combining for seven three-point baskets. Zimmerman made four and finished with 15, while Peck hit three as part of her game-high 19.
The Lady Pirates went on a 10-0 run to start the third quarter and nearly put the game away after back-to-back hoops by Peck made it 33-19 with 4:34 to play. But Tyrone responded with an 8-0 run sparked by a Brooke Garbinsky three and five points from Tepsic to cut it to 33-27 before a three-point heave in traffic at the buzzer by Rachel Emigh made it 35-30.
However, the Lady Eagles would make only two more baskets over the next six minutes, while Williamsburg did a turnaround with their own shooting.
