Tyrone ‘s seventh grade basketball team took on the Golden Tigers of Hollidaysburg Thursday evening at the Roosevelt Gymnasium in an action packed thriller from the opening tip-off.
The Tigers came out running and caught the Eagles flat on their feet and ran off with an early 8-3 lead.
Following a 30-second timeout, the Eagles got up to speed and clawed their way back to tie the contest 10-10 at the half way point of the first half.
JD Dorminy picked up his third personal foul early in the half and was picked up by teammates Nick Romano and Jared Schaffer defensively. The Eagles closed the half with a 15-13 lead in a game with both teams matched up in man defense and both squads looking for some oxygen at the break.
The second half turned into a barnburner that most fans in attendance would have agreed to see over at 10 times the price. After the first 10 minutes of the second half the Eagles kept a small lead, both teams matching baskets one after another.
The action inside was intense as Kaleb Chronister and Nick Patton battled on the glass. With the Eagles down 30-31 and 48 ticks left to play, Steve Franco broke lose on a full court press break to lay in his game high eleventh point and the lead 32-31.
The Tigers however answered again and took the final 33-32 only after a final shot with a second left by Nick Patton that rolled off the rim.
Richard Crabtree contributed 10 points offensively while JD Dorminy led the way defensively this evening scoring six points as well.
“I’m so proud of this young team. They left every ounce of effort on the gym floor this evening and played one heckuva a great game,” according to Coach Stever.
Tyrone will play their next contest Saturday, December 30, at 2:30 p.m., in Altoona at the Building II.
