The Discount Food Program, a regional food program sponsored by the Champion Life Center, has set its March menu and is also accepting new participants.
The Discount Food Program is offered through the Champion Life Center located at 1311 12th Avenue in downtown Altoona.
New participants are currently being accepted. There are no income or residential restrictions to participate.
Those wishing to sign up for the program, and save 50 to 75 percent on their food bill, are asked to visit the center Saturday, March 10, between 9 a.m. and noon. Be sure to take a photo ID.
Individuals who have not made a purchase in 2007 may need to reregister.
Current participants who wish to place an order this month may also do so Saturday, March 10. Cash, access cards or money orders are accepted. The food distribution day will be set aside later this month.
Fresh baked food and Coffee will be made available on March 10 for takeout.
The Discount Food Program offers individuals with an affordable way to get the food they need in any given month. Participants are asked each month to visit the center to place orders for their food. A box of preselected food costs $17.50 for individual packages and $25 for family packages. A new menu is created each month. There are also monthly specials for participants.
Individuals may purchase as many boxes of food as they wish, but must do so on the designated day.
Another Saturday will be set aside for individuals to pick up their purchases.
It is suggested that a cooler, laundry basket or other large box is brought to carry the food items.
Participants may purchase food during any month, but are not required to make a purchase each time.
The following is the Discount Food Program’s March menu and prices.
This month’s individual package is $17.50 and the menu includes: 2.2 lbs. roaster chicken; 5 lbs. farm fresh potatoes; Italian style meatballs; 1 lb. frozen cauliflower; breaded chicken nuggets package; frozen green beans; 1 lb. ground turkey; package of Polish rope sausage; 1 lb. frozen California blend vegetables; box of Texas toast; package of blueberry waffles and 2 lb. French fries.
The family package costs $25 and includes: 2 lb. frozen Lenten fish; turkey pot pies; 5 lb. fresh sweet potatoes; 2.2 lbs. roaster chicken; Italian style meatballs; 5 lbs. farm fresh potatoes; 1 lb. frozen cauliflower; breaded chicken nuggets package; 1 lb. ground turkey; frozen green beans; package of Polish rope sausage; 1 lb. frozen California blend vegetables; box of Texas toast; package of blueberry waffles and 2 lb. French fries.
Also offered are this month’s specials, which are available with the purchase of at least one box of food.
The first special is Easter turkey dinner with a 10 lb. turkey, rolls, dessert, canned vegetables, frozen vegetables, fresh vegetables and fresh fruit. The cost for the Easter turkey dinner is $26.
For those who prefer ham, an Easter baked honey ham dinner is available as special two. It comes with a 3.38 baked honey ham, rolls, dessert, canned vegetables, frozen vegetables, fresh vegetables and fresh fruit for $21.50.
Special three is ribeye steaks which includes (6) 8 oz. steaks for $13.50 and special four is boneless pork sirloin roast (netted), a 1.5 lb. roast for $6.50.
The last special is an Easter treat. A1 lb. Peanut Butter Melt-a-way, great for Easter baskets, is only $5.
All food weight is approximate.
Participants are reminded that there is always a need for volunteers on the day of pick-up to help unload the trucks and distribute the food.
There are no income or residential restrictions. The Discount Food Program is not affiliated with other similar programs. Please bring a photo ID, along with cash, farmer’s market nutrition checks, an access card or a money order.
