Calvin E. “Earl” Stewart Sr., 80, of S. Eagle Valley Road, Port Matilda died Monday, March 12, 2007 at his residence.
He was born July 8, 1926 in Tyrone a son of Lawrence and Hope (Bricker) Stewart. On December 9, 1944 in Macon, Georgia he married Dorothy G. “Dot” Beckwith.
Surviving are his beloved wife Dot of 62 years, a daughter Judy Snyder and husband Jack of State College, a son Calvin E. Jr. and wife Kathy of Point of Rocks, Maryland, 4 grandsons Greg Stewart and wife Heather, Scott Stewart and wife Ellen, Jonathan Snyder and fiancée Lauren, Travis Snyder and Traci, 2 great-grandchildren Saede and Emily Stewart and a brother Robert Stewart of Tyrone. He was preceded in death by a sister Mary Helen.
Mr. Stewart retired in 1981 from the Port Matilda Post Office following 35 years service. He had been Post Master for 7 years after previously serving as a rural mail carrier. Following retirement he was a charter bus driver for Fullington Bus Company, State College for 10 years.
He was a member of the Hannah United Methodist Church, Port Matilda Lions Club and the Port Matilda Order of Odd Fellows. He was a 1944 graduate of Tyrone High School.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII serving as a Private 1st Class with the Anti Tank Company 325th Glider Infantry and the 82 Airborne Division with service in Rhineland and Central Europe.
Earl and his wife wintered in Florida for 4 months every year where he enjoyed fishing and was an enthusiastic member of the shuffleboard team. He was an avid hunter.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 16, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Hannah United Methodist Church with Rev. Samuel Reese officiating. Interment with veterans honors accorded by the Port Matilda American Legion will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Everyone is invited to Fowler Grove for food and fellowship following the services.
Friends will be received at the Feller Memorial Home on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
